Oregon and Boise State have met only twice in their history despite their proximity to one another, and you may be surprised to know that Boise State has won both the previous matchups. The most recent meeting came in 2009 during Chip Kelly’s coaching debut with the Ducks, and Chris Petersen’s Broncos won that meeting 19-8. Of course, the most memorable part of that game took place after the game had ended.
Might be stirring things up here, but I studied the handshake between Oregon football coach Mario Cristobal and Boise State coach Bryan Harsin and think there may be some bad blood brewing between the Ducks and Broncos. After all, these two coaches coveted the same job a week or so ago. And only one got it.
First, know that the rest of the final news conference for the 26th Las Vegas Bowl turned into a two-team nap at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Friday. Sorry, but when you stage a rivalry best known for a LeGarrette Blount punch in the city that gave us McGregor v. Mayweather, I’m showing up.
But Friday’s scene was a snooze. Harsin and his star players opened the news conference. They said almost nothing of interest in 16 minutes of lip flapping. Then, Oregon’s Mario Cristobal talked along with his players. They also pretty much said nothing. The moderator tried, I suppose. He called the visitors, “Bronco State,” once. Maybe just to see if anyone was awake. My eyes went immediately to Harsin, the seven-point underdog coach, who sipped water, and sat there like he was waiting for a bus in the middle of the Mojave.
